The mission of the ESHCA Wellness Program is to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of all ESHCA Employer-Member employees by empowering people to promote and model positive attitudes and behaviors through a lifelong commitment to wellness and prevention.

Wellness Program

The mission in action, encourages members to develop a relationship with their Primary Care Physician through use of the annual physical. Members should take an interest in their personal health through the “Know Your Numbers” campaign which includes blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body weight. "Your Numbers" can be an indication of current and future health, "numbers" outside the normal range correlate with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases (heart disease, stroke and diabetes). The final step is to apply the appropriate intervention, ideally there is a nutrition and/or exercise “fix”, however, if that does not meet the need you should consult your physician regarding possible medical treatment. Annual physicals, dental cleanings and yearly vision assessments are positive steps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and providing an avenue for early detection of possible health risks.

Research in the health and well-being of American’s overall, demonstrates an "at-risk" population for cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke), diabetes and obesity. One study examined a wide-range of 19 professions, identifying construction work as the 10th most at-risk group. Based on additional studies and surveys, the data appears to be a result of:

  • poor food choices (including diets low in fiber and high in saturated fats);

  • too tired to eat and not enough time to prepare food;

  • confusion on reading labels;

  • abstaining from food for long-periods of time and then overeating;

  • comfort eating;

  • replacing meals with drinks or cigarettes;

  • and replacing food with energy drinks or sodas.

If there is one area we can focus on in the USA it is nutrition; our society has shifted from "farm fresh" to "quick and easy"! An overabundance of processed foods allow the average American to go days, months, even years without eating a fruit or vegetable. As little as a 5-10% reduction in body weight demonstrates positive effects on our “numbers”, lowering the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Health professionals suggest construction wellness programs focus on nutrition education; working with companies and their employees to establishing "supportive environments" for success. When fully functioning, the website will have 5 specific intervention areas including:

  4. Tobacco Cessation

  5. Medical Self-Care
